Research Projects & Funding

The Institute of Process Imaging (IPI) is supported by a robust portfolio of competitive third-party funding. Our work is deeply integrated into Germany’s elite coordinated research networks and funded primarily by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as well as industrial partners.

Collaborative Excellence Networks

BlueMat: Water-driven materials

Funding: DFG Excellence Strategy (2026 – 2033)

Role: Principal Investigator, Cross Area Imaging

Focus: We lead the imaging cross-area, developing non-invasive magnetic resonance techniques to decode complex fluidic and thermal processes within novel, water-responsive smart materials.

SFB 1615: SMART Reactors

Funding: DFG Collaborative Research Center (2023 – 2027)

Role: Principal Investigator, Project B03

Focus: Applying high-resolution imaging to map complex multiphase flows, providing the critical empirical data needed to optimize and scale the next generation of sustainable chemical reactors.

Individual Research Grants (DFG Sachbeihilfen)

We continually advance and apply our core imaging methodologies through targeted fundamental research grants.

Design of structured packings using CFD-based optimization, absorption experiments and magnetic resonance imaging

Funding: DFG (2024 – 2027)

Overview: This project combines CFD-based mathematical optimization and 3D printing to design highly efficient structured packings, validating these novel structures by mapping complex internal fluid dynamics with our globally unique vertical MRI system.

Magnetic resonance imaging and numerical modelling of hydrodynamics in vibrated bubbling fluidized beds

Funding: DFG (2021 – 2026)

Overview: Utilizing a globally unique 3-Tesla vertical MRI system, this project non-invasively maps the complex 3D hydrodynamics of vibrated bubbling fluidized beds to rigorously validate and enhance predictive CFD-DEM simulation models.
