Our Research

From Black-Box Models to Mechanistic Insights

Conventional optimization in process engineering often relies on global performance data, leaving internal transport phenomena as a „black box.“ At the Institute of Process Imaging (IPI), we resolve these dynamics using non-invasive, high-resolution operando magnetic resonance techniques, supported by in-house hardware development to push the limits of detection sensitivity.

By providing spatially and temporally resolved data from within opaque reactors, we move beyond empirical correlations. Our approach integrates custom RF detector development with advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to provide the empirical ground truth required to validate predictive models and accelerate the development of sustainable chemical processes.

1. Custom Hardware & RF Engineering

High-fidelity imaging requires maximizing the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). We design and manufacture application-specific Radiofrequency (RF) detectors and multi-channel receiver arrays tailored for the challenging environments of chemical reactors.

  • Custom Detector Arrays: In-house fabrication of specialized coils optimized for high-pressure or metallic environments.
  • SNR Maximization: Leveraging advanced geometry and cryogenically compatible materials to capture low-concentration phenomena.

2. Advanced Methodology

  • Operando MRI & Velocimetry: Mapping 3D fluid distribution and velocities using our globally unique 3-Tesla vertical MRI.
  • CFD Validation: Providing high-fidelity empirical data to rigorously validate and refine complex numerical simulations.
  • Optimized Prototyping: Coupling mathematical optimization with 3D-printing for rapid, model-based iteration.

3. Engineering Applications

  • Sustainable Reactor Design: Characterizing multiphase flows, structured packings, and catalytic reactors.
  • Smart Materials: Deciphering fluidic and thermal transport in water-responsive biological systems.
  • Complex Fluids: Advancing the rheological characterization of non-Newtonian and soft matter.
